Winter months here on the edge of the Western World produce some of the richest sunsets and here's some shots from December 7, 2009. Kite Surfing emerges... Cheers and the best of the Season to All.
After 36 years of being asked...Here's My Book! Of course it's a picture book of a 'Once Over' handheld tour. Hopefully it will bring back fond memories or encourage a return trip soon! Actually, there is an upside for us in that distilling the 110 photos in this book there were so many more that show up with amazing new directions and slants on capturing the mystique that is San Francisco. On the drawing board are titles like "Oddballs & Reflections" or "The Hoods of the Hills" or "The Alleys of San Francisco". Stay tuned here for updates and new releases.
This is the first of 2. This is focused mainly on Lilac Alley and 24th St. vacinity and the next will feature famous Balmy Alley. For closer exmination of all images visit my Flickr Site for the same images.
A foggy day shoot in late September produced these "FogDawgs @ the Gate #3" shots. Music provided by a young 2 brother band called 'Freelands' who magically 'wafted' thru my life one day last week. He gave permission to use this music. Via email Alireza Kamran writes:
The music is recorded by my brother (Navid) and I. We like to call our 2-man band Freelands. On this particular song, Wahaj Bukhari, a good friend of mine, came up with the guitar line. I picked that up, replayed it, wrote the lyrics, and sang it. My brother added the electric piano and keys.
Have a great day, - A
Here
Here on the starts I stand tonight With a star in my eyes and a scar in my heart There I recall what I have been told All our souls are tied to grow (All our dreams are tied to go) The kid in my reason cannot even chase Butterflies of where we are, or where we go
Here I am... show me your love Here I am... show me your truth Here I am... show me your face Here I am... show me you love
I think there's great things in store for these young men.
A very serendipitous stop at the Angler's Lodge for a quiet shoot encountered Floyd Dean and wife working on the some advanced techniques of Fly Casting. Floyd is an FFF Certified Master Fly Casting Instructor. He showed me some of his incredible skills including writing my initials, skipping a fly to make it look like a real insect (unattached)and even a new mechanical aid to physically teach the 'feel' of proper casting! His lovely wife Janet seemed awfully good to me but only he could write SOS!
I had the chance to avail myself of this opportunity and found it to be very enjoyable and a satisfying experience. Lots of people to meet and very little structure other than a basic route to follow. Having a great deal of 'course knowledge' always helps. Have a look at my new slideshow and see what you think. Hope you enjoy and give feedback if you are inclined!
Summer in the Bay Area guarantees fog sculptures. From my perch in the Marin Headlands, I found these undaunted folks, brightening up the 'scape and having a grand time doing it.
At least temporarily, the print service I have been using is 'broken'. Until further notice, please contact me for prints. I can get them to you in several sizes, framed and unframed. Just drop me an email (wendellshinn@mac.com) or call me at 415.734.0637.
In the true 'Troubadour Spirit', one of our favorite local performers whom I hope to be doing some work with soon. My Webmaster turned me on to him. She just posted this interview from a pub in San Rafael on youTube.
Have a look at my new Faces Album -- The 'faces' are young and old, friends and strangers, mostly unposed and caught in their act. I'm very pleased with the assortment of kids, exuberant, brooding, clowning and mostly unaware of my camera. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed capturing their moments.
A couple of weeks ago there was an awesome spectacle in San Francisco's Union Square called the 4th Temple of Poi Expo. I shot some fascinating images of these young (and brave) dancers. In addition to 'playing with fire', they performed in extremely windy and Wintery weather! Check them out in my new Fire Dancers Album
You can change the way the albums work - slideshows, lite box, thumbnail strips, etc. by clicking on 'Views'. You can also pause, slow down or speed up the slideshows. Have a look: wendell.jalbum.net
"Trauma"...A NBC TV pilot being shot in San Fran...(about Emergency Responders) involved a multiple car / tanker truck explosion....I waited 5.5 hours for this shot...worth it I think..
I've been enjoying a hobby of photography for about 50 years now and am finally getting results representing my expectations though they seem to grow with time and experience. I hope you can find some unusual photos and many familiar ones in unusual ways to those who've had the pleasure to visit my beautiful and genteel city by the bay. The highest compliment would be that you find something of value and use. I hope you find it as accessible as it can be online. Any comments and observations are welcome and I would be honored by your 'autograph' in my Guest Book. The longer vision is a book and a personalized calendar that you will be able to build from your designation.
Welcome to my dream unfolding........ "Fear is the darkroom in which we develop our negatives."
My art career began at 5 years with my first oil painting at my Mother's side. I went from oils to acrylics to fine line expression and by the time I was 15 I had developed a love for photography. I completed a course at the Art Institute of Westport, CT and was a commercial art major at Baylor University in Waco, TX before joining the Air Force in 1965. I was an Air Force Illustrator and ran the Photo Hobby Shop exploring experimental photography, winning 3 awards at the AF Worldwide Photo Competition. My greatest admiration was always the National Geographic and Life Magazine photographers and now NG hosts a gallery of mine.
